Good job. Tom, common? I've never heard it used that often really...

I dunno. I just want something a little more interesting, ya know?

so this fetus walked into a bar...
I suppose. I guess I'm going a little more in the opposite direction. Everyone has to be unique, why can't someone be normal?

I think why you have this "everyone has to be unique" perspective is because OCs with uncommon or "unique" names make more of an impression most of the time than just Sarah or some common name. Not always, but an interesting name, or at least a good (or sometimes bad) name has a way of sticking out. I'm not saying creative names are better than the everyday name, though. I want you to understand that its not what the name is its how the name fits. Some characters are better with unique names and other are better off complimented with an average name.
Its also about the creators taste in names. I like to mix in average names, but I think its fun to come up with names or search the web for interesting names, too. Many people, some of who I know, like to assign their OCs japanese and japanese sounding names (though a lot of the times its because their OCs are from Japan, but not always). I, myself, am not very crazy about asian names. But that's okay, everyone's tastes are different. I've seen people who have OCs with just common names and others with OCs with uncommon names, and many people who have a mix.
What I'm saying is that unique names aren't a fad. Its not the "cool in thing" its all a personal thing between the creator and the created. Please don't think that just because I'm thinking of changing Tom's name means I'm trying to fit in or anything, because that is not the case. I just want to look around and see if I can find a name better suited for him.
I rushed picking his name out actually. It was more like a temporary fix. When I was little I had originally named him Tails so I could make a pun off of the title "Traveling Tails" which I got from the name of the assignment "Traveling Tales". It took me a while to realize that I couldn't use that name for obvious reasons; there was already a fox from a popular series named Tails. (actually isn't it Miles? w/e people know him as Tails) I didn't plan on keeping Tom's name as Tom, but I didn't plan on changing it either, y'know? I decided I would just figure out the details when I felt like it.
So no, everyone does not have to be unique, and yes, there are OCs with normal names.
Rant Over.
